Critically acclaimed Liverpool based band The Cubical return with the irresistibly catchy On The Weekend, the lead single from their new album, Arise Conglomerate (out 19th Nov). From the Garage -Motown bass and brass introduction to the Merseybeat call and response harmonies in the fade out, there is no let up in either energy or melody; and it’s all over in two minutes fifty four seconds of madness. Singer Dan Wilson’s typically acerbic lyrics point to the hollow glory of the weekend: all dirty girls, drinking and “gurning fools”. One can imagine many a sweaty dance floor full to the brim with revellers rasping along with Wilson’s blues growl and pounding away to the relentless thump of the bass drum which underpins the whole track. Sitting rather nicely on top of the instrumentation is some fantastic guitar and brass work which culminates in a gloriously soulful descent after a blistering guitar solo to introduce the third verse as Wilson takes the reigns once more to deliver us to the end. Call it what you will: Punk-soul, Garage-Motown, or just plain old Rock n Roll; as ever The Cubical have simultaneously created something which sounds both familiar and brand new, and certainly like no other band that’s around today.
